(Laughter) He sent two men from an acacia grove ".to spy secretly, saying, 'Go view the land, even Jericho." So he sends out these two spies. And so, to conquer the Promised Land, first big battle they were going to have, how do they deal with the city of Jericho? And so we take up chapter 2 and it says, "Now Joshua the son of Nun" - you think everybody's got to be the son of somebody, but they always tease that Joshua was the son of Nun. It's one of the lowest places in the world and right there, where the city of Jericho was, was sort of the main funnel entrance point where they needed to cross. To the west - I'm sorry, to the east of Israel is a big desert and so no one really went through there so they all went through the Jordan Valley. It was - and it's one of the oldest cities in the world - it was just right there - land bridge - where you've got Israel that connects Africa and Asia and Europe, you know. The main city they needed to conquer to enter the Promised Land was the city of Jericho and it had some massive walls and gates and they thought, 'How are ever going to conquer the Promised Land if we can't take this primary city of Jericho?' Now Jericho was located right on the intersection of three continents. The walls of Jericho were also pretty formidable. And that wall, right now, someone said if you took all the material that was involved in building the Great Wall of China, you could make a wall that would be about five feet high and three feet wide all the way around the world at the Equator. With satellite imagery they found there are hundreds of miles that they did not even realize before, that they can detect that had been built. They thought it was about ,1500 miles long, but they've discovered it's actually longer than that. I've been there about four times, but I remember we went together once and we went and looked at the great wall of China. You know, a few years ago, Karen and I went to China with our boys. But they were a little bit concerned about entering the Promised Land, because the spies that had looked at the Promised Land 40 years earlier had seen the strong nations and the large walls, and they thought, 'How are we ever going to conquer a nation with walls like that?' They are on the borders about to enter the Promised Land. We've got a lot to cover so I'm going to invite you, if you have your Bibles, to turn to the book of Joshua - Joshua chapter 2 - and just to give you the stage of what is happening here, the children of Israel have just come through the wilderness. You can see a little red rope coming out of that window and we'll talk about that as we proceed. It kind of takes after this panel that you see there.

Tonight we're going to be talking about a hero of faith in the Old Testament, another woman, by the name of Rahab and she's got - there's another hero in the story and that's Joshua. Now in our last presentation we talked about a hero of faith, a woman in the New Testament, Mary Magdalene. Tonight's story is going to be what I think is a wonderful catalyst for talking about some very important events, not only in the past, but it'll help us understand some things that are coming in the future and it's titled the red rope of Rahab.
